Graduate Program

Mexican American Studies has emerged as a significant area of scholarship since the 1970s. The University of Texas at Austin has been at the forefront under the leadership of faculty members such as George I. Sánchez, Carlos E. Castañeda, and the founder of the Center for Mexican American Studies, Américo Paredes. These scholars helped to define Mexican American Studies as an interdisciplinary field of study carried out from the perspective of the Mexican American experience.

Today, CMAS faculty associates and graduate students continue this proud legacy. Their work raises new questions, formulates and explores new theories, and carries out empirical research that expands the understanding of a variety of fields, including communication studies, cultural studies, educational policy, history, the humanities, performance studies, public and social policy, and the social sciences.

Contact the graduate program office if you have questions about the Master of Arts degree program or Graduate Portfolio Program in Mexican American Studies.  Please note that CMAS does not offer an on-line option for the Master of Arts degree program or the Graduate Portfolio Program in Mexican American Studies.
