Amigoland Chosen for "Mayor's Book Club"

Posted: January 2, 2010

The "Mayor's Book Club" for Austin, Texas has selected the book Amigoland by Oscar Casares, Assistant Professor of English and CMAS Faculty Associate.  Amigoland tells the story of two stubborn, estranged, and ageing brothers who live in a small town on the Mexican border. The brothers are brought together by the urging of Celestino’s much younger girlfriend, Socorro. Together, the two brothers and Socorro catch a bus into Mexico hoping to discover more about a family legend.

The Austin Public Library, in conjunction with the Mayor's office, Austin Public Library Friends Foundation and the University of Texas Humanities Institute, launched the 9th annual citywide reading campaign to develop a community experience through reading and discussion of a shared book. All of Austin is invited to read the book and then join together in special events and programs in April 2010.
