The Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS) is pleased to host the Barrio Writers summer 2015 writing workshop on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin. The workhop will take place July 13 to 17, with a public reading scheduled for Saturday, July 18, 2015.
The Barrio Writers summer 2015 writing workshops will be led by Sarah Rafael García who recently received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Texas State University--San Marcos and originally founded the program in Orange County, CA and Aileen Ford who is a Master of Arts student in Latin American Studies at UT Austin and will serve as the writing advisor.
The Barrio Writers program is focused on teen-age participants and consists of free workshops and additional one-on-one tutoring throughout the academic summer break, with monthly cultural arts events during the school year. Through these workshops and events, students build their skills in reading, grammar, creative writing and freedom of expression through the cultural arts.
The writing workshops are designed to empower the teenage community while establishing a self-sufficient educational program that will represent community pride, perseverance and endless possibilities for following generations.
One goal of the program is to publish an anthology collection of written works demonstrating the diverse backgrounds of teenagers. All profits from the book will be returned to the Barrio Writers program for future years. The long-term goal is to publish a new edition each year with hopes that more neighborhoods will adopt the program.
In addition to the Austin, Texas chapter Barrio Writers has a chapter in Santa Ana, California, and last year held a summer writing workshop hosted by the Chicana and Chicano Studies Department at California State University, Fullerton.
