Supporting the Jefferson Center
The Jefferson Center relies entirely on the generosity of departments to provide faculty to teach our courses and on the generosity of donors to support our postdoctoral fellows program, lecture series, book club, discussion sections for lecture courses, Jefferson Scholars program, and executive seminars for adults. Most of our staffing and other operating expenses are covered by donations as well. We welcome gifts both to cover current year expenses and to begin building an endowment, including four proposed endowed postdoctoral teaching fellowships. We are also interested in increasing teaching and research opportunities for graduate students who are writing dissertations on the great books and who will ultimately be prepared take the serious, interdisciplinary teaching of the great books to other colleges and universities.
Targeted Donations
Here are some examples of how gifts may be designated to support both small and large activities of the Jefferson Center:
$350 supports one Jefferson Scholar for one semester
$500 provides a travel grant for a graduate student to present a paper on the great books at an academic conference
$1300 provides a discussion leader for a large great books course that would otherwise have only a grader
$2500 provides a course development grant to support a UT faculty member in developing a new course in the great books
$3000 gives summer support to a graduate student writing a dissertation on the great books
$5000 sends a graduate student to a summer language program
$10,000 pays a lecturer or retired faculty member to teach a great books course
$15,000 supports a graduate student for a year to write a dissertation on the great books
$50,000 supports a post-doctoral fellow for a year to teach two courses and revise a dissertation for publication
$80,000 brings a junior faculty member to UT as a visitor to teach four courses in the great books
$1,200,000 endows a permanent post-doctoral fellowship
