REE 302 • History of the Jews in Russian and Eastern Europe

Course Description

During this course we will focus on the Jews as a distinct minority within a multi-national Russian empire, struggling for personal and national rights in areas where the non-Jewish populations (the Poles, the Ukrainians, the Lithuanians) engaged in their own struggles for national liberation. We will discuss the political, social, economic, cultural and intellectual developments within the Jewish community starting with the 18th century Russian empire and ending with the post-Holocaust Poland and Soviet Union.
