The twentieth century was a period of dramatic social and political transformation for Eastern Europe. This course, organized around both lectures and discussion, will deal with the major political, social, cultural events that shaped Eastern European society in the twentieth century. The focus of the course will be on the impact of the Balkan Wars, World Wars, Yugoslav Wars, as well as the influence of nationalism and communism in the region. We will explore the nuances of opposition and collaboration and make ethnic conflict and coexistence an important subject of discussion and analysis.
