The Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies presents:

The Albanian Question in Tito's Yugoslavia (1945-1991)

Dr. Mariyana Stamova

Professor of History

Institute of Balkan Studies & Center of Thracology

November 16, 2011

3:00 - 4:00 pm

PAR 101

This talk will focus on Albanian development issues in Yugoslavia after the end of the Paris peace conference and the establishment of the new post-war order in Europe and the Balkans. Stamova will discuss how Yugoslavia, as a unitary state with greater-Serbian hegemony before the Second World War, advanced towards a federative structure in which a new solution for interethnic relations was offered – between the constitutive peoples and their state formations. By interpreting how attitudes towards the ethnic minority communities within the borders of the Yugoslav federation changed and became divided in into three republics each with a different status, number, and importance, Stamova will trace the amendments of Yugoslavia which turned a problem of Serbia alone into a problem of the entire federation- specifically- increasing tensions among the Albanians as the autonomy of Kosovo was challenged.
