Talk: “Geopolitics and Political Clans in Russia" by Robert Amsterdam

Tue, October 16, 2012 • 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM • Texas Union 3.304, Quadrangle Room

The Energy Institute & The Center for Russian, East European, & Eurasian Studies present:

Robert Amsterdam
“Geopolitics and Political Clans in Russia”

Tuesday, October 16,
2:00 PM

Texas Union 3.304

Quadrangle Room

International energy lawyer Robert Amsterdam, whose clients have included the jailed Russian tycoon-turned-dissident Mikhail Khodorovsky, provides an insider’s view of the internecine battles among the Russian elite. Rather than a united class led by president Putin, the elite is in fact made up of disparate clans in constant struggle with each other, fighting over the spoils of Russia’s vast natural resources.

Amsterdam, a native of Canada now living in London, will discuss how the Russian elite is more interested in diverting the cash flow from the exploitation of oil, gas, and other natural resources than in suppressing the civil rights of citizens, as seen by the recent jailing of the band Pussy Riot.

The talk, sponsored by the university’s Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies and the Energy Institute, should be of special interest to students and teachers of the social sciences, law, history, public policy, and energy-related studies.
