February 20: Burnt by the Sun 2

Burnt by the Sun 2 is a 2010 Russian drama film directed by and starring Nikita Mikhalkov . It is the sequel to Mikhalkov's 1994 film Burnt by the Sun, set in the Eastern Front of World War II. Burnt by the Sun 2 had the largest production budget ever seen in Russian cinema ($55 mln).  In Russian with English subtitles.  2010, 181 min.

February 27: The Inner Circle

(With an introduction by Dr. Joan Neuberger, Department of History)

The Inner Circle is a 1991 drama  film by Russian director Andrei Konchalovsky (brother of director Nikita Mikhalkov), telling the story of Joseph Stalin's private projectionist and KGB  officer Ivan Sanchin between 1939 and Stalin’s death in 1953. The film is based on a true story and is an American, Italian and Russian production. In English, 137 min.  

March 6: Within the Whirlwind

During Stalin's reign of terror, Evgenia Ginzburg, a literature professor, was sent to 10 years hard labor in a gulag in Siberia. Having lost everything, and no longer wishing to live, she meets the camp doctor and begins to come back to life.  The film is based on Evgenia Ginzburg’s autobiography.  A German/Polish/Belgian production, dialogue in English.  2010,   90 min.

March 20: East-West

A  naive Russian émigré and his family repatriate to the post-WWII Soviet Union, only to discover, too late, the full truth about life under socialism.  Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film 1999, Academy Award nominated.  In French and Russian with English subtitles.   120 min.
