Talk: "Region, Nation, Religion: The Caucasus' Struggle for Independence" by Shalala Mammadova

This talk will provide brief historical information on the Caucasian peoples' struggle for independence during the last 200 years through comparative analysis of the events that happened in the British Empire and the territory of modern USA in the XIX-early XX centuries. The talk will also touch on the modern social-political situation in both parts of the Caucasus, especially Islamic fundamentalism issues in Dagestan, and the clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan and between Georgia and Abkhazia.

Shalala Mammadova is an associate professor at Baku State University. She specializes in the political systems and ethnic problems of former Soviet Union and is the author of the books Interpretation of Totalitarianism: Stalinism in Azerbaijan and Introduction to the Source Studies, as well as numerous articles on the problems of modern historical researches, ethnic and religious identity of Caucasian region, and national minorities' issues in the former Soviet Union.
