CREEES faculty and graduate students present the history of four major Russian Protestant movements – Dukhobory, Molokane, Khlysty, and Skoptsy – and their relationship with the Church and the State. The first part of the panel will focus on the origins, persecution and eventual dispersal of the Molokane and Dukhobory beyond the Russian empire and their settlement around the world and, in particular, in North America. The second part will be dedicated to the analysis of the spiritual legacy of the Dukhobory, or the Spirit Fighters, who had an especially strong influence on Russian intellectual history and on the work, religious philosophy, and spiritual life of great author Lev Tolstoy.

Panelists: Dr. Bella Jordan, Dr. Tatiana Kuzmic & PhD student Katya Cotey
