Talk: "Molotov Democracy: The Struggle to Secure Representative Government in Ukraine" by Tony Smith
Wed, April 9, 2014 • 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM • Batts 5.108
Ukraine erupted in protest after the Yanukovich led government turned away from a trade agreement with the European Union in favor of closer ties with Russia. After months of demonstrations and violent clashes between police and protesters in Kiev that left scores of people dead and hundreds injured, President Yanukovich fled Ukraine and his government collapsed. The Euromaidan Revolution, however, is only the latest example of a tug-of-war between Russia and the West over the fate of an independent, democratic Ukraine. This discussion examines the timely question of Ukraine's future as a European state. Check out the flyer for the talk here!
