A Talk by Alexandra Oprea, Romani Feminist
Fri, April 18, 2014 • 3:00 PM • Atwood Library, CAL 300
Columbia University’s Alexandra Oprea, Romanian-born Romani feminist activist, will be giving a talk addressing the intersectional subordination of Romani women and the parallels between the experiences of Romani women and those of women of color in the US. She will speak on the European Court of Human Right’s jurisprudence on Romani women and their reproductive rights. Discussed will be the string of compulsory sterilization cases and their legal underpinnings. Through these, she will analyze the emancipatory potential of human rights law---what do these cases tell us about how human rights conceptualizes the subordination of Roma? How does HR law function to challenge and also legitimize systems of oppression?
