The sixth annual Mayor's Book Club choice is Around the Bloc, an award-winning story of the travels of Latina writer Stephanie Elizondo Griest through Communist capitol cities. Along the way, Griest connects with a rich collection of characters through drink, dining, and dancing. Her four-year journey through Moscow, Beijing, and Havana is an absorbing tale of political, social, and personal discovery and will encourage timely dialogue on America's role in the world, our perceptions of foreign peoples and cultures, and their perceptions of us. Griest will visit Austin in mid-April to discuss the book at a community-wide event. There will also be a series of events leading up to her visit.
