The first in a trio of films (by Michael Verhoeven and two other filmmakers) dedicated to the memory of the Munich student resistance group of the same name. Verhoeven portrays the larger environment of the early 1940s in the Third Reich which provoked the students to rebel: the male students' experiences at the Russian front, the Nazi's Stalingrad military debacle, and a student riot at Munich university. He shows the underground production and the distribution of flyers which finally leads to the arrest of the Scholl siblings.
