About Us

The program for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies (formerly Post-Soviet and East European studies) was established at The University of Texas at Austin in 1984. Since 1988 the U.S. Department of Education has designated the University of Texas a National Resource Center for Russian and East European Studies and began awarding funds for Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships. In 1985, the University was chosen by the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies (AAASS) as the host institution for its journal, The Slavic Review, for a six year term, 1985-1991. Since then, numerous faculty members have been recruited to teach courses in Russian and East European area study disciplines and competitive grants have been received from public and private sources.

Presently there are some 50 faculty members associated with CREEES, representing 15 different departments at the University. Each year, CREEES offers approximately 50 courses in the languages of the area and 60 courses in the social sciences, humanities, and professional schools relevant to the study of the former Soviet Union and Central and Eastern Europe.

CREEES sponsors a variety of scholarly, instructional, and outreach activities during the academic year. Scholarly events include lectures by distinguished visiting speakers, film and photography exhibits, an annual Symposium featuring the best current scholarship on the region, and an international symposium in conjunction with other area centers at UT. CREEES offers BA and MA degreees as well as four joint degree programs. In addition to regular undergraduate and graduate courses, CREEES sponsors workshops in thesis preparation, grant writing, and career counseling. Throughout the year and during the summer CREEES sponsors outreach programs for K-12 teachers including a speakers' bureau, K-12 resource pages for students and teachers linked to the center's homepage and training institutes to bring the latest scholarship to K-12 teachers.

All events are announced in a monthly newsletter, which is available on-line. An e-mail listserv is open to the entire community.

The University of Texas is one of the sponsoring institutions of the Council for International Educational Exchange (CIEE) and is also an affiliated institution of the American Council of Teachers of Russian (ACTR). The Center regularly sends undergraduates and graduate students to participate in a full range of exchange programs in the former Soviet Union and Central/Eastern Europe sponsored by these and other organizations. In addition, as an institutional member of the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX), The University of Texas sends its faculty members and graduate students abroad, and receives individual scholars and delegations in return. CREEES faculty members are currently engaged in collaborative research projects with scholars in the former Soviet Union and Central/Eastern Europe.
