Mike Dennis gives Department of State briefing

Posted: December 15, 2010

Mike Dennis, Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Government and long-time
CREEES affiliate, gave a briefing at the Department of State to a select
group of analysts and bureau chiefs.  His topic, "Chechen Refugees and the
Politics of Violence," has been his subject of in-depth study for many
years.  A US Marine Corps veteran of Somalia, Dennis has worked with
humanitarian-aid groups to help rebuild school programs in Grozny, Chechnya
and, for his dissertation, has completed extensive field work in the
southern and northern Caucasus and over 300 interviews in Chechen refugee
settlements within the former Soviet Union and Europe. His overall research
interests include political violence and terrorism, ethnic politics,
politics of the former Soviet Union (particularly the Caucasus and Central
Asia), and American Foreign Policy.

Currently Dennis is a 2010 Social Science Research Council Dissertation
Fellow (supported through Dept. of State Title VIII funds).  This fellowship
supports Mr. Dennis throughout the 2010/2011 academic year as he completes
his dissertation.
