Center for Women's & Gender Studies

Started by a handful of faculty and students in 1979, CWGS now has over two hundred and fifty faculty affiliates, several degree programs, and hundreds of students who participate in our programs. We have a growing national reputation in the women and gender studies community.  The Center for Women's and Gender Studies is also listed in the Ms Magazine/NWSA 2009 Guide to Women's Studies under both their Undergraduate and Graduate categories.

Our academic programs include:

  • Bachelor's of Arts in Women's and Gender Studies
  • Undergraduate Minor (depending on student's degree requirements)
  • Master's of Arts in Women's and Gender Studies
  • Graduate Portfolio (similar to a minor for graduate students at UT)
  • MA/MSIS Dual Degree program with the School of Information
  • MA/MPAff Dual Degree program with the School of Public Affairs

Fall 2010: Applications for our Master's Programs must be postmarked by December 15th 2009.

Current UT undergraduate students may declare a WGS major online at any time.

Dr. Susan Heinzelman appointed as new director for CWGS

Susan Heinzelman, Associate Professor of English at The University of Texas at Austin, has been appointed director of the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies (CWGS). Building the center’s teaching and research strengths has been a high priority for Heinzelman, who served as the center’s interim director last year. During the next four years, she will help the center remain competitive with the best women’s and gender studies programs in the nation by pursuing a range of funding opportunities. “Under the visionary leadership of past directors, the Center for Women's and Gender Studies has become an essential part of the university's research and teaching mission,” Heinzelman said. “I am honored to have the opportunity to build on the work of these talented women and to advance the center's reputation for academic excellence.”
