Course Description
This course will trace the historical permutations of same-sex eros in Western culture from the Renaissance to the foundation of the early homosexual rights movement in Germany about 100 years ago. Reconstructing the self-perceptions of artists, authors, and historical agents from each of the last five centuries, we shall explore how and when sexuality evolved from a set of practices into a category of personal identity. Particular attention will be paid to the appropriation of classical antiquity as a cultural paradigm to permit discussion of what was otherwise taboo.
Grading Policy
