Course Description
This class will focus on the face of justice, the issues that have changed our view of justice, the institutional changes that have promoted a new vision of justice, and some of the players who have brought about change. We will address the literal change from the time when the face of justice included no women's faces at all --- when a woman could not be licensed to practice law or sit on a jury in this country. We will also address issues that are now pressing legal concerns that were not part of our earlier jurisprudence: equality in the rights of women in employment, governmental benefits, and participation in sports; increased protection of women from domestic violence and sexual harassment; increased privacy for choices, including our reproductive rights; an expanded view of international human rights and the need for protecting our values at home and abroad. RESTRICTED ENROLLMENT; CONTACT THE DEPARTMENT FOR PERMISSION TO REGISTER FOR THIS COURSE. COURSE NUMBER MAY BE REPEATED FOR CREDIT WHEN THE TOPICS VARY. THE ISSUES THAT HAVE CHANGED OUR VIEW OF JUSTICE, THE INSTITUTIONAL CHANGES THAT HAVE PROMOTED A NEW VISION OF JUSTICE, AND SOME OF THE PLAYERS WHO HAVE BROUGHT ABOUT CHANGE. TAUGHT BY JUDGE BEA ANN SMITH.
