Course Description
This course is designed to provide an overview of historical and contemporary issues facing African American families and children while emphasizing prevention and intervention models that have been shown to alleviate problems and empower African American individuals and communities. Topics covered will include African American heritage and cultural history, impact of racism and oppression, gender, sexuality and relationships issues, family patterns and parenting, adolescent development and racial identity, education, community development, criminal justice, institution of black church, health and mental health dynamics. This course is an upper-division, social science elective and is open to BSW students as well as other majors and graduate students.
