Course Description

Quite central to the course is an understanding of how women's autobiography and feminist theory of (womens) autobiography have thoroughly transformed the study of the genre. Attempting to define experience, agency, and processes of subject formation, feminist theory has played a big role in the fields theoretical articulations, as well as advancing the understanding of autobiography as a genre with a profoundly emancipatory potential. Focusing first on womens texts in terms of gender, their inquiry soon came to include issues of class, racial, and postcolonial identity, and expanded to investigate the writing of (profound) psychic trauma.
