DELL'ANTONIO, A

Course Description

The course addresses changes in musical culture in Italy ca. 1550-1650, using the figure of Claudio Monteverdi as a centerpiece, but focusing broadly on the changing social roles of musicians and their audiences, as well as the styles and genres that became prevalent and shaped the European tradition from that point on. Significant attention will be placed on the role of women, both as musical protagonists and as "characters" in vocal and stage music, and on the way that musical changes in this timeframe helped to "construct" long-standing cultural assumptions/understandings about gender (both masculinity and femininity).
