HACKETT, J

Course Description

The roles of women in the Hebrew Bible have generally been ignored, in favor of theological, historical, or philological readings of the texts. There are many passages, however, in which women's roles are crucial, and we will examine these from the points of view of women’s history and of kinship studies, for example, and in comparison to other women’s lives known from the ancient Near East . We will also attempt to reconstruct the daily lives and religious customs of women from several strata of life in ancient Israel.
