Course Description
This course id devoted to the study of gender politics in the Islamic world. We will focus on women's rights, which have been a key political issue in several countries and internationally. The course offers a comparative introduction to gender, social organization, culture and politics in a number of Islamic countries. It is designed as a seminar with students taking an active role in discussing readings and raising questions. Coursework There will be three written assignments. The first paper is a review, the second is a report on data from one or more countries, and the third is a research paper. Each student is expected to make an oral presentation to the class and to participate in class discussion. GRADING: Book Review: 10% Country Analysis: 20% Research Paper: 35% Presentation: 20% Class Participation: 15%
