Course Description
The Renaissance in Italy is traditionally dated 1350-1550. In this class we will explore aspects of political, social, economic, and especially cultural change that characterized these two centuries. Focusing on Florence, Milan, Naples, Venice, and Rome, we will consider trends in politics, in trade, the organization of work, and material culture; in diplomacy and warfare; and in patronage, family life, and individual expression. Emphasis will be placed upon the "recovery of learning" and its effect on areas ranging from religion and gender to technology and politics. Weekly reading quizzes on primary sources and two essay exams. Grading by contract.
