Richard Nunan, College of Charleston

The focus of this talk is a specific aspect of criticism as it plays out in the development and usage of the concept of a transgender gaze (coined by Jack Halberstam), or its absence, in The Crying Game (1992) and Boys Don't Cry (1999).  Dr. Nunan will argue that the term transgender gaze, understood as a contrast to Laura Mulvey's male gaze, has been inadequately developed. (I.e., it's not really coherent.)  And it has been misapplied in misreadings of both these films Dr. Nunan contends that such misreadings are prevalent because of the prevalence of a dismissive attitude which some queer theorists have towards such films, which they regard as a form of gender tourism.
