Out in East Berlin film screening with Jochen Hick
As part of the 2013-2014 Germanic Studies lecture series
ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE EAST
organized by Prof. Hake and Prof. Rehberg, and sponsored by the Department for Germanic Studies and DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), I am happy to announce our first guest, Filmmaker Jochen Hick from Berlin.
Already for a few decades, Jochen has been one of the most prominent directors in Germany working on LGBT topics, for instance with his documentary "East/West - Sex & Politics" on the gay and lesbian movement in Eastern Europe" (2008), or with "Talk Straight: The World of Rural Queers" (2003) for which he was awarded the Teddy Award for best documentary at the Berlin Film Festival.
We invited Jochen to show us his new documentary which premiered at this year"s Berlin Film Festival:
OUT IN EASTBERLIN: LESBIANS & GAYS IN THE GDR
Time: 6:30 PM
Place: CLA 0.112
The screening of the film (about 90 min) is followed by a discussion with Jochen Hick. Jochen will be in Austin for a few days, he is also visiting Prof. Hake's and my classes. Beyond his queer expertise, Jochen is also very knowledgable in the areas of film production and contemporary TV culture in Germany (he not only co-funded a lot his movies with Arte and others German or European TV stations, but also worked several years as editor-in-chief for a private TV station). If you are interested in one of these topics, there would be the opportunity to meet and chat with him. So take advantage of his presence here in Austin - don't hesitate to ask, and we will arrange for an extra meeting. Please spread the news!
