Gretchen Ritter Book Talk
Thu, February 23, 2006 • 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM • PAR 306
CWGS Director Gretchen Ritter will give a brief talk about her new book The Constitution as Social Design: Gender and Civic Membership in the American Constitutional Order this Thursday, Feb. 23, 3:30 - 5 pm in Parlin 305. The book provides a new way of thinking about constitutional development as a process that is driven by debates over civic membership. At the heart of this new approach is an argument about the role of the constitutional order in socially designing the nation by recognizing or restraining various social roles and relations as we navigate between claims for individual liberty and demands for social order. The book also provides an overview of the changing terms of women's civic place in the American constitutional order from the Civil War to the late twentieth century.
