South Asian Writers Speak: Women, War and Trauma

Wed, March 8, 2006 • 2:30 PM - 5:00 PM • WC Hogg 4.118, Meyerson Conference Room

In honor of International Women's Day, a group of seven South Asian writers (from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh) examine the role of women in literature in times of war and trauma, either in their native countries or abroad. Readings from original works will be interspersed with discussion about themes and contexts, the topics ranging from partition narratives and the 1971 civil war in Pakistan that led to the creation of Bangladesh, to natural disasters (like the recent earthquake in northern India and Pakistan) and their effects on the female population, domestic violence, religious intolerance, and ethnic and economic exploitation of women. All of the writers will also be presenting a panel at the Association of Writers and Writing Programs the following day in the Austin Convention Center. Writers: Sorayya Khan, Waqas Khwaja, Mahmud Rahman, Alka Roy, Sehba Sarwar, Ilana Yusof
