"China's economic reforms since the 1980s have led to fundamental changes in urban life. However, little is known regarding how this change and the required adjustments affect individuals' psychological well-being. Using survey data collected in 2005, this study examines the effects of employment conditions, political affiliation, social capital, and regional development on self-reported depressive symptoms among urban Chinese. The results support that China's transition has an impact on individuals' mental health.
