Oomotokyo, a Shintoist new religion, became the most rapidly growing religious group in Japan in the 1920s and 30s. This talk will explore the reasons for its phenomenal popularity, focusing on the roles of its charismatic founders, Deguchi Nao and Deguchi Onisaburo.
