FDP New Faculty Colloquium: Cecilia Balli
Fri, April 17, 2009 • 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM • GAR 2.108
The talk examines the retooled role of the military in the Mexican State's campaign against organized crime, and the effects of this on military-civilian relations. Specifically, in the case of Ciudad Juarez, it argues that the military's campaign has produced a State-sanctioned model of systematic gendered violence against socially and economically disenfranchised men. The author examines this new wave of violence in relationship to the murder of hundreds of women in the 1990s and 2000s, and argues for the development of a shared theoretical and historical framework for understanding both problems.
