Biography
Dr. Horner is a Professor of Nursing. She is also Assistant Director of the Cain Center for Nursing Research.
Dr. Horner's research focus is families with children who have chronic illnesses. Currently her work centers on school-aged children with asthma in families who live in rural areas. Her secondary research focus is on health promotion and risk prevention among school age and early adolescent youths.
The goal of her intervention is to improve asthma management behaviors of parents and children to reduce asthma symptom frequency and duration. Her recently completed study (5R01 NR007770) found significant improvements in children’s asthma management behaviors, skill in using a metered dose inhaler, and reductions in absenteeism, days and nights with asthma symptoms, and days when activity was limited by asthma.
