Biography

Professor of Spanish Literature and Culture and Chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.    Author of Frames of Referents: The Postmodern Poetry of Guillermo Carnero (Bucknell UP, 1997), Crossing Through Chueca: Lesbian Literary Identities in Queer Madrid (U of Minnesota P, 2011), editor of P/Herversions: Critical Studies of Ana Rossetti (Bucknell UP, 2004), and co-editor of a special issue of Studies in 20th/21st Century Literature on “Rethinking Spain from Across the Seas.” My next project will focus on the ethical representation of violence and witnessing in contemporary Spanish poetry.

SPN 380M: Teoría queer transatlántica

The main objective of this course is to review queer representations, criticism and politics in the Hispanic world from a transatlantic perspective. A selection of literary works, films, and works of art, as well as critical and theoretical materials, will be the object of discussion. The topics we are going to address are: gender, transvestism, camp aesthetics, family, the politics of the closet, use of space, migration, globalization, law, activism, violence and health, as related to sexualities in Spain and Spanish America.

 

Grade criteria

 

25 %            Short essay: An analysis, 7-10 pages in length, as a preliminary version of the final paper. To be turned in on October 29th.

15%            Annotated Bibliography: should include 10 entries including: critical texts, dissertations, book reviews, websites and literary histories related to the topic of the term paper. To be turned in on October 13th.

20%             Oral Presentation: In the last week of the course, students will present their term papers in 20 minutes followed by a group discussion.

40%     Final Essay: 18-20 pages and must be turned in no later than December 10th. It will consist of criticism of literary works, films and/or art works that have not been included in the syllabus. Students may talk to the professors regarding their final project. MLA style is required.

 

Course Policies:

 

Only 2 absences are allowed without penalty. After the 2nd one, a point from the final grade will be reduced for each absence, except when valid and documented excuse is presented: conference attendance, illness, death, accidents, court attendance, etc. (family reunions or non-emergency travels are not excusable).

 

Only when a student has a valid excuse, will he or she be allowed to turn in assignments after the scheduled date.

 

Students must talk to the professors in their offices when they have any concerns with grades, class performance, and other issues related to the class.

 

Professors must give grades of assignments at least one week after student presented or turned them in.

 

Professors will give general feedback in class after each assignment or any time students request it. They also will be available in office hours or by appointment (in case of schedule conflict) to talk about the progress of any particular student.

 

Professors will make themselves available to discuss appropriate academic accommodations that a student may require as a student with a disability. Before course accommodations will be made, students will be required to provide documentation prepared by the Services for Students with Disabilities Office (SSD).
