Gretchen Ritter
Director


Gretchen Ritter, Director of CWGS since 2004, is a Professor of Government, where she teaches American political development, constitutional law, and gender politics. She received her BS in Government from Cornell and her PhD in Political Science from MIT. Ritter specializes in the study of democratic movements, including women's rights movements. She is the recipient of a National Endowment for Humanities Fellowship and was a Liberal Arts Fellow at Harvard Law School. Her first book, Goldbugs and Greenbacks, is a study of political debates over banking and finance in the late nineteenth century. Her new book, The Constitution as Social Design, is a study of gender and citizenship in American constitutional development.

Dr. Ritter teaches this semester on Tuesdays from 2 - 5.

Susan Sage Heinzelman
Associate Director, Graduate Adviser


Susan Sage Heinzelman Associate Director of CWGS since 2005, is an associate professor in the English Department. She received her PhD from the University of Western Ontario and her BA from the University of London. She is an award winning teacher who in addition to the courses she offers for English has also taught extensively in Law and various interdisciplinary programs on campus. Currently, she is the president of the Association for the Study of Law, Culture and Humanities. In 1994, she published a book (co-edited with Zipporah Wiseman) entitled Representing Women: Essays in Law, Literature and Feminism.

Dr. Heinzelman teaches this semester on Tues/Thurs from 11am-3:30pm.

Kathleen McDonagh
Assistant to the Director


Kathleen McDonagh received her B.A. from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell and her M.A. in English Literature from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to joining the Center for Women's and Gender Studies, Kathleen worked for more than 15 years for the University of Texas Libraries, primarily in public service. She is interested in international folk music and dance and participates regularly in several local recreational and performance dance groups.
