The Humanities Institute and the Center for East Asian Studies at the University of Texas at Austin is proud to announce the fifth annual Paul and Mary Ho Lecture in China Studies.
This year's lecture features Dr. Lisa Rofel, professor of anthropology at UC-Santa Cruz, who researches urban political economy and culture in contemporary China. Dr. Rofel will give a talk on "The 21st Century Silk Road Between China and Italy" at 7:00 pm on Monday, February 20, 2012. The talk will be held in the Avaya Auditorium in the ACES building on the southeast corner of 24th and Speedway. It is free and open to the public.
Dr. Rofel is the author of Other Modernities: Gendered Yearnings in China after Socialism (University of California Press 1999) and Desiring China: Experiments in Neoliberalism, Sexuality and Public Culture (Duke University
The Humanities Institute received a generous gift to endow an annual public lecture in China Studies from UT faculty members Dr. Paul Ho, who holds a Cockrell Family Regents Chair in Engineering, and Mrs. Mary Ho, a Chinese
language specialist and former lecturer in the Department of Asian Studies. The lecture aims to extend and deepen understanding of and engagement with China in the University community and among the general public.
