Across the Divide: A Roundtable Discussion of Contemporary Chinese Art
Tue, March 6, 2012 • 6:30 PM • Visual Arts Center, East Gallery, Art Building at 23rd and Trinity
The Visual Arts Center presents a roundtable discussion in conjunction with the exhibition Across the Divide, which showcases twenty-five contemporary Chinese artists who are currently working in academia across the United States. The discussants include Amy Lewis-Hofland, Director of The Crow Collection, Dallas; Dr. Madeline Hsu, Director of the Center for Asian American Studies and Associate Professor in History at the University of Texas at Austin; Beili Liu, faculty host of the Across the Divide exhibition and Associate Professor in Studio Art at The University of Texas at Austin; and Dr. Yun-Chiahn Sena, moderator of the discussion and Assistant Professor in Chinese Art History at The University of Texas at Austin.
The roundtable discussion will explore the significance of a shared, multi-faceted identity expressed through the artists' cross-cultural perspective. Taking a close look at the works in the exhibition, the discussion will also reflect on the interpretation and influence of these and other similar artistic forms created in the changing and economic environments of post-Mao China and the US. The discussants will invite comments from the audience on issues related to Chinese art and culture in the context of today's globalized society.
There will be an exhibition tour with Beili Liu and Yun-Chiahn C. Sena from 6:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
Across the Divide was organized by the Crossman Gallery at The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and presented in partnership with Center for Asian American Studies at The University of Texas at Austin. Faculty organizers include Xiaohong Zhang at The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Beili Liu at The University of Texas at Austin.
