Course Description

Analysis of important cultural trends and structures of 20th-century France. Readings and lectures in English. The course will deal with French society from 1789 to the present day. Readings will focus on collective and individual reflections of the most significant crises in French history during the period in question. The dominant theme is the emergence of modern France from the revolutionary attack -- at once political, legal, religious and military--on the ancien régime, the old, monarchically governed, tripartite society of clergy, aristocracy and the third estate (which included everyone who was neither royal, nor aristocratic nor a member of the clergy). In other words, how were royal subjects transformed into citizens with various, clearly defined civil rights, and why has the history of modern France been so often so violent? Fulfills basic education requirement in writing.( May not be counted toward the fulfillment of the language requirement for any bachelor's degree.
