From the Creation to the Crisis: A Talk by Stuart Holland

European Union Center of Excellence EU-US Distinguished Business and Politics Lecture Series

Wed, November 6, 2013 • 4:00 PM • CLA 1.302E

A sustained recovery of the European economy is vital for American business. Stuart Holland shows that this could parallel the US New Deal through bond finance without new institutions or federalism and draws implications for US-Europe relations, for the G20 and for global economic governance.

About Stuart Holland: In his 20s, when an adviser to Harold Wilson, Stuart Holland gained the consent of Charles De Gaulle for a 2nd British application to join the European Community, resigning when Wilson did not follow this through. His advice to Papandreou and Mitterrand resulted in the cohesion commitment of the 1986 Single European Act which has been neglected in the current crisis. In 1993 Jacques Delors endorsed his proposal of Eurobonds, which recently have hit headlines.  From 1979 to 1989 he was a Labour Member of Parliament.
