Kathleen Tyner is Assistant Professor in the Department of Radio, Television and Film at the University of Texas-Austin. She is author, editor and co-editor of numerous books, articles, and curricular materials about media education, including Literacy in a Digital World: Teaching and Learning in the Age of Information, Visions/Revisions: Moving Forward with Media Literacy, A Closer Look 2003: Youth Media, and the award-winning, Scanning Television II.
Tyner consults with NGOs and community-based groups to conduct research, development, evaluation and technical assistance for new media and technology projects. Her client portfolio includes Bay Area Video Coalition, the Miami Museum of Science, Texas Commission on the Arts, UC-Berkeley Pacific Film Archive (CA); Southeast Regional Education Service Center (UT); and the City of Portland Telecommunications Policy Committee (OR). International clients include the British Film Institute (London), Face to Face Media (Canada), Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (Madrid/ La Coruña); and ININCO, Universidad Central de Venezuela..
Professor Tyner serves on a number of community-based media boards and advisory boards, including the editorial board of the International Journal of Learning and Media. She is a recipient of the Jessie McCanse Award in 2000 for outstanding contributions in the field of media education.
