As I stated in my 1967 Introduction, I gave a course in 1963 on the development of historical linguistics in the 19th century. The students were each asked to translate one of the notable articles or a section of a larger work. I translated the others included here that had not been published in English, and I wrote the Introduction.
When the book was sold out, Indiana University Press decided not to republish and gave the copyright to me. Online publication seems the best means to make this Reader available. I am grateful to Dr. Jonathan Slocum for his excellent production of it.
