Ancient Sanskrit Online

Base Form Dictionary

Jonathan Slocum and Karen Thomson

This Base Forms Dictionary index lists, in an alphabetical order suitable to Ancient Sanskrit and the script employed for it, every unique base form underlying one or more surface (word) forms in lesson texts. For each base form a general meaning (if any) is shown, along with links to every usage, in every numbered lesson, of the associated surface forms. With this index, one may click on any link to perform a quick "usage look-up," and thereby study how surface forms in texts are constructed from base forms.

Two points should be noted: (1) the usual practice of Sanskrit dictionaries is to arrange and according to the original sounds that they replace. In this glossary they consistently occupy their alphabetical position immediately preceding the consonants; (2) translations that are debated are in italics.

Note: this page is for systems/browsers with Unicode® support, but fonts for only the Unicode 2.0 character set (including combining diacritics). Versions of this page rendered in alternate character sets are available via links (Romanized and Unicode 3) in the left margin.
