Indo-European Linguistics

Semantics

Jonathan Slocum and Carol Justus

[UNDER CONSTRUCTION]

Early work on Indo-European semantics has often been concerned with semantic fields, or with the grammatical categories encoded in derivational and inflectional suffixes (i.e. morphology). As with other languages, issues of syntax and semantics also overlap, particularly with regard to issues of case role and sentence perspective.

Concerns with pragmatics, including the way a speaker's intention is encoded in a language, and with text stucture, including such problems as the way clauses are linked in the construction of paragraphs and how pronouns and other linking devices are used in sentences and paragraphs, are not yet overtly addressed here.
