Biography

Emily is a doctoral student in the Department of Sociology. She's interested in gender and gender identity, sexualities, race and ethnicity, and health. She's also interested in identity-based social movements within marginalized communities--particularly how such movements negotiate and influence medical categories of health and identity. Her thesis research investigates sexual minority experiences of health care through in-depth interviews with a diverse sample of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer participants living in New York City.

Emily is also a part-time research assistant for Dr. Debra Umberson's Health and Relationships Project, funded by the National Institute for Aging. Last year, Emily was a research assistant for the related Massachusetts Health and Relationships Project, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
