Swedish higher education at the beginning of the 21st century

with Hans Linquist, Pro Vice Chancellor for Research, Malmö University, Sweden

In the middle of the 20th century Sweden’s higher education landscape was made up of a limited number of universities educating a small proportion of the population. Today a large number of universities and university colleges offer a wide spectrum of courses to almost 50% of each new generation. In the talk Professor Lindquist will describe the current Swedish higher educational system and how it is set up to prepare students for the local and global challenges that they will encounter in their private and professional lives.

The Swedish Higher Education Act and the Higher Education Ordinance specify that all higher education should provide the following:

  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant areas.
  • An ability to make independent critical assesments.
  • An ability to identify, formulate and solve problems.
  • Preparedness for changes in the student’s professional life.

Professor Lindquist will discuss how this is reflected in Swedish universities. A further particularly important aspect of Swedish higher education is internationalization/globalization, and he will talk about the role of student and staff exchange and about opportunities for exchange between Sweden and the Unites States.

Presented by the Department of Germanic Studies and the Texas Language Center and made possible through generous financial support from the Swedish Excellence Endowment.
