Using FrameNets for language teaching and learning - Don’t say you will walk to Hawaii

FrameNet with different language versions might be a useful tool supporting language students in learning to communicate in different situations, guiding them in choosing lexical units and sentence patterns. 

As FrameNet is not based on either syntax or lexicon, rather on semantic units or concepts, framenet creators for languages other than English can and have built their framenets based on the English frames, which are relatively language independent, and then populated the frames with language specific items: lexical units and annotated sentences. Presenting language students with selected semantic frames could be a way to introduce situations, while the lexical units support vocabulary learning and annotated sentences show syntax patterns. 

One problem for language learners is when words in two languages have similar meanings, but different usages and distributions. A typical problem for an English speaker learning Swedish is translation of the verb go. There is a Swedish near equivalent ‘gå’, which is sometimes used in a similar way: ‘Ska vi gå nu?’ Shall we go now?. However, ´gå´ implies walking. Non-native speakers are often revealed when they claim that they have walked very long distances, to other countries or across oceans.
