Prof. Ricardo Gualda, Universidade Federal da Bahia, Brazil, will discuss cognitive semiotics in the foreign language classroom, its importance in teaching culture and identity in the language learning process, and how its use better prepares students for real-life interactions than the simulations commonly used in the communicative methodology and task-based learning of most institutional language-learning settings. He will exemplify the application of cognitive semiotics to foreign language pedagogy with the use of songs in a Portuguese language activity.
