Profiles in Language Teaching at UT: Dr. Orlando Kelm
Orlando R. Kelm (Ph.D. University of California, Berkeley, 1989) is Associate Professor of Hispanic Linguistics in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Texas at Austin. His professional interests include language and culture for professional purposes, such as Business Spanish and Portuguese. His current research focuses on the creation of instruction materials, including the use of technology in foreign language instruction. He currently serves as the Associate Director of Business Language Education for the Center for International Business Education and Research at UT, Austin.
I rotate among three different types of courses. First, I teach the Portuguese language courses, usually the upper division classes. These are the advanced conversation and advanced grammar classes. Second, I teach the Spanish phonetics and phonology type classes, both at the undergraduate and graduate level. Third, I teach the Business Language and Culture classes. This in includes both the MBA elective courses as well as others in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. I just love to focus on the cultural aspects of international business.
I’m a firm believer that in education “it’s not what I do but what I get the students to do” that results in learning. From student-written blog posts, to student-created video taping, I love to see students create things. A second influence of mine is “if a certain technology is used in society, I can modify it and use if for language teaching purposes” Examples would be blogs, evernote, video taping, audio recordings, you tube, netvibes, facebook, twitter, mobile devices, etc. No doubt, I am an early adapter.
Another favorite right now is my Conversa Brasileira series because I think it’s a pretty unique way to use video in language teaching.
