If you are an undergraduate student at UT Austin who would like to fulfill the UT language requirement in a foreign language that is not regularly taught, one of the resources the Texas Language Center provides access to is oral and written proficiency testing.

You must satisfactorily complete two exams, one assessing your speaking and listening proficiency (the Oral Proficiency Interview, or OPI) and another assessing your written proficiency (the WPT or the 12-point written exam).

The TLC offers testing for the following languages:

Afrikaans Malay
Albanian Swahili
Cantonese Tagalog
Haitian Creole Vietnamese
Indonesian

If you do not see the language that you would like to test out of listed here, and it is not offered through the University of Texas, please contact us at tlc@austin.utexas.edu or by phone at (512) 471-6574.

The testing process for these languages is different depending on the language:

  • Tests for Albanian, Cantonese, Haitian Creole, and Vietnamese are administered through Language Testing International (LTI). Currently the price for taking both the OPI and WPT from LTI through the TLC is $249.
  • Tests for Afrikaans, Indonesian, Malay, Swahili, and Tagalog are administered through Language Testing International (LTI) for the OPI and through New York University (NYU) for the 12-point written exam. Currently the price for taking the OPI from LTI and the 12-point written exam from NYU through the TLC is $464.

If you have any questions regarding the LTI tests, view the FAQ's for the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and the Writing Proficiency Test (WPT).

If you are interested in TLC's language proficiency testing, please follow these steps:

  • Pay for the testing by going to the TLC's TxShop store. Purchase the proficiency test (which includes both the oral and written exams) for the language you're interested in.
  • Provide additional personal information via an online form (linked from the TxShop proficiency exam page) that will aid in the preparation of the tests.
  • You will take your tests in the TLC office, which is located at HRH 4.196 and can be reached by phone at (512) 471-6574.

NOTE: Please be aware that successfully completing these exams does not offer you credit hours. This means that you must still complete the required number of hours for your degree, but if you are assessed at the required level, your language requirement will be waived.
